Ephebe from Tralles
The statue probably represents a young
athlete leaning against a tall rectangular
pillar, tired and relaxed after a training
session.
His body is wrapped in a mantle made of felt
worn like that of the shepherds of the
present day. He has muscular legs and on
his feet he wears leather sandals fastened
at the ankles with long straps.
Originally the sculpture was probably a part
of the decoration of a gymnasium.
The original statue, found in Tralles (Aydin),
148 cm high, is dated to the late 1st cent.
B.C. and is exhibited at the Istanbul Museum.
